Promoting fellowship and world understanding
via free voice and video communication service

Rotary International

Download and install Skype voice software

  • Download and install latest version of free Skype voice communications software from www.Skype.com
    • The pre-requisites for using Skype are:
      • Windows, Mac, Linux, or Pocket PC system
      • Speaker
      • Microphone
      • Internet access
    • If you already have Skype installed, click on help menu and select update to download and install latest version.
    • Once you have latest Skype version installed, start it up from desktop icon and register with a user id of your choice.  This Skype ID can be shared with other Rotarians just like a phone number so they can call you via Skype.
    • Be sure to set option to relate all callto:// links in browser to Skype in order to use the link associated with each Skype ID in the directory to start call with single click.

Request addition of your name and Skype ID to Rotarians on Skype Directory

  • Complete this form and click on submit to request that your name and Skype ID be added to the Rotarians on Skype Directory.  You may optionally include your email, club web site, and district web site links to be included in directory.

  • To schedule a call with a Rotarian on Skype in another time zone, you can use the email link in the directory to email them requesting time, or you can join the Rotarians on Skype email support group below for help in contacting other Rotarians on Skype.

  • You are invited to join the Rotarians on Skype email support group for help with questions, assistance in locating other Rotarians on Skype, and scheduling conference calls across time zones, etc.

Talk to Rotarians on Skype

  • Once you have installed Skype software you can call and talk to other Rotarians around the world that are online and have Skype installed

  • If you know their id or already have added them to your Skype contact list, you can call them directly by:

    • Double click on red Skype icon on your desktop to start Skype

    • Click on "contacts" tab

    • Click on link to any contact listed if they are online indicated by bold type versus faint type

  • If you don't know their id, you can look in the Rotarians on Skype Directory.  You can call them directory by simply clicking on their Skype ID link.  As the directory grows, you may also be able to quickly contact a Rotarian by finding a fellow Rotarian in their club or district and contacting them.

Security Options for Skype

  • Skype has several security options to limit access to your Skype id incase you are concerned about unsolicited calls.
    • Start up Skype
    • Click on File menu
    • Click on Options
    • Click on Privacy
      • From this page you can block anyone from calling you if they become a problem
      • You can choose to only allow authorized user ids to call.  Note this will prevent anyone from calling you unless you add their id to your contact list first so I prefer option 1 as it has not been a problem yet.
      • Another effective way to control Skype access is to click on Skype file menu and select status to set it to "away" if you don't want to accept calls for a period while you are online.

Answering Service for Skype
  • Now you can download and install a new Answering Service for Skype
    • First install the latest version of Skype
    • Next install the free answering service software which automatically connects to the Skype software
    • Once its installed you can double click on the SAM icon to view and listen to any pending messages
    • You can also change options such as:
      • Number of seconds to wait before auto answering and prompting for voice message
      • Selection of voice and text greeting
      • Sound options to signal events such as beep every time a contact comes online (uncheck if you don't want to be notified)

Hope you find this guide useful and will join the Rotarians on Skype Directory.   By growing this directory of Rotarians around the world on Skype, I hope it will become a useful way for Rotarians to find and communicate with other Rotarians promoting Rotary fellowship and service projects around the world.
